Spittle Bugs

The Spittlebug: What Alabama Lawns Should Know Now

What Is a Spittlebug?

The Two-lined Spittlebug is the most common lawn-damaging species in the Southeast. It gets its name from the foamy “spit” its nymphs produce for protection. These bugs are especially active in Alabama from late spring through summer, with two main generations per year.

What they look like:

  • Nymphs: Tiny, yellowish, and covered in white foam masses near the base of grass blades.
  • Adults: Black with two orange or red lines across the wings. They jump like grasshoppers.

They love Centipede, Bermuda, St. Augustine, and Zoysia grass—especially if the lawn is overwatered or has a thick thatch layer.

Signs of a Spittlebug Problem

  • Frothy white foam clusters at the base of turfgrass
  • Purple streaks, curling, or yellowing grass blades
  • Patches that look like drought stress
  • Grass thinning or wilting despite regular watering

How to Get Rid of Spittlebugs

1. Strengthen Your Lawn First

A thick, healthy lawn is your best defense:

  • Mow regularly to proper height
  • Dethatch if your thatch layer is more than ½ inch
  • Water deeply but less often to avoid creating a moist breeding ground

2. Physical Removal

For minor infestations:

  • Hose down foam masses with a strong stream of water
  • Try a soapy flush: mix a tablespoon of dish soap in a gallon of water and pour over a 1-square-foot area

3. Use Insecticides When Needed

If the infestation is widespread:

  • Choose products containing bifenthrin, deltamethrin, or permethrin
  • Apply in the evening after mowing and light watering
  • Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides that harm beneficial predators
